"Clipper Young America arrives in London on the first commercial flight by the New Generation of Wide-Body Jets, January 22, 1970"More than 350 tons of airplane, wide as a boulevard and longer by far than the Wright Brothers' first flight, soared over the Atlantic with a capacity of 362 passengers, a crew of 20, and more than 6000 cubic feet of cargo capacity, to inaugurate commercial service by the new behemoth of the airways -- the Boeing 747 that Pan Am conceived, helped design, and introduced. Commanded by Captain Robert M. Weeks, the huge B747 (N736PA) made the crossing from New York in six hours and 43 minutes. The 747 incorporates the most advanced technology, notably an Inertial Navigation System adapted from the Apollo Space program that pinpoints the craft's position at all times without outside refereces, and a fully automatic landing system. Pan American World Airways' 747 led to a new era in aviation that is becoming known as the System of the Seventies.

"Pan American Jet Clipper departs New York for first scheduled jet passenger flight to Paris, October 26, 1958"American aviation entered the jet era on the evening of Octover 26, 1958, when Pan Am Jet Clipper America (N711PA) commanded by Captain Samuel H. Miller, took off from rain-soaked New York International Airport Bound for Paris with 111 passengers. This was the first scheduled commercial jet flight by a United States airline. The Boeing 707 jet, flying at 575 miles an hour reducing the crossing time -- once 23 hours -- to seven hours. With this flight Pan Ams Boeing 707s and Douglas DC-8s began leading the way in bringing the advantages of the jet age to more than 80 lands around the world. The Jet Clippers like no other aircraft shrank the globe, putting any point on the earth's surface within 24 hours of any other point, and boosting air traffic bolume to previously undreamt-of levels.

"Clipper America, first airliner to service Operation Deep Freeze, arrives Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica, October 15, 1957"Pan American Boeing B-377 Stratocruister, Clipper American (NC1030V), carrying government officials and United States Navy construction teams assigned to Operation Deep Freeze, arrives McMurdo Sound on October 15, 1957. Captain Ralph Savory and a crew of nine departed Christchurch, New Zealand, on this pioneering commercial airline flight to Antarctica. The double-decked Boeing landed on a snow-covered runway built by a 'wintering-over' party laboring in temperatures as low as minus 68 degrees fahrenheit. The Stratocruiser, a mainstay of Pan American's fleet for 12 post-war years, was a favorite of both flight crews and passengers. These aircraft logged an impressive 7,500,000,000 passenger miles before retiring to make way for new Jet Clippers.
